The subpar condition and renovation of our state’s roads has been a major issue for several years now, and while efforts are underway to address the roads, many challenges remain as to how to fund the extensive repairs that are needed, at the federal, state, and local level. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting economic downturn, state and local tax revenues have suffered in recent months, meaning that major infrastructure projects such as maintaining and improving roads may be in jeopardy of delay or cancellation unless new sources of funding can be found. It will behoove the Berrien County Commission to make sure we are investing in the highest priority projects first, and that we are getting the most for our money from those contracted to perform those projects.
